How This Was Built
This visualization was built by Claude Co-Work. It started when my brother-in-law asked me what an AI agent is. To demonstrate, I asked him for a question to test one out — he wanted to see Level I trauma centers mapped by proximity to Billings, MT. The entire first version was produced collaboratively in a single session.
The map uses deck.gl’s ArcLayer to render 3D great-circle arcs between Billings and each trauma center. Arc height scales with driving distance. The base map is powered by MapLibre GL JS with CARTO’s Dark Matter basemap. After the initial five-state version, I expanded it to cover trauma centers across the entire country.
Trauma center data was sourced from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) verification database and state trauma system registries. Driving distances are from Google Maps.
