FISSION / FUSION

Oppenheimer runs two interrogations in parallel — one seen from inside the man in color, one watching him from outside in black-and-white: “Fission (color, subjective) and Fusion (black-and-white, objective) braid two hearings across decades.” The film braids them so each hearing answers questions the other is still asking; the strands cross, separate, and finally close on the same point.

FORMAT: FIRST B&W IMAX

Parts of Oppenheimer were shot on film stock that did not exist until this production: “First feature to shoot sections on IMAX black-and-white 65mm film stock.” The stock was manufactured for the picture — the black-and-white Fusion scenes exposed on emulsion no camera had ever run at that gauge.
